The entrance sign for the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, California.

If you are planning a trip to San Diego the summer of 2011 there is no way you cannot have a fantastic time. It is such a diverse area you will not be able to get everything done in a few days or even a week.

If traveling with children, the Zoo Safari Park would be like taking a trip through Asia or Africa being able to see many exotic animals in their normal habitats. Belmont Park has a historic 1925 roller coaster and a carousel along with a variety of arcade games, amusement rides and shopping on Mission Beach. Traditional park food is available for a picnic right on the beach. End the day watching the sunset while walking the boardwalk.

Driving the beautiful bridge connecting Coronado Island to the mainland is a not-to-be-missed experience. One of the best hotels in San Diego is the Hotel del Coronado located right on the beach which is beautiful for swimming, sunbathing, surfing, or just walking. Birch Aquarium will always entertain all ages and there is no need to tell the children that it is also educational. During January and February plan a Whale watching tour. There are cruises year round showing the sights of the harbor and dolphins are often seen frolicking around the boats.

For the adults wanting to be a little more daring, try a ride in a bi-plane, or a sunrise or sunset romantic hot air balloon ride with the Del Mar coastline or Temecula wine country below. For the beer tasters, get on the Brewery Hop and party on while touring and sampling the area breweries for a taste adventure.

There are so many San Diego hotels, resorts and inns; it is hard to say which ones are the best hotels in San Diego. A lot depends on what activities you are planning on doing. Try to find lodging close to those areas if possible. In the heart of San Diego’s historic Gas Lamp quarter is Hotel Indigo and Hilton San Diego. Near the airport is Courtyard by Marriott. The beautiful Victorian Britt Scripps Inn that was built in 1887 and restored to its original elegance is two blocks from Balboa Park. Downtown the Westin is a striking high rise with a jewel design. Hyatt Regency Mission Bay is a resort destination of its own.

Legoland – A San Diego Hotel Deal Favorite! Honor the Child Within.

Our best deal $10 Off Resort Hopper Tickets Plus 2nd Day Free!

Our first post is about Legoland! For native Southern Californians, Legoland has been a welcome addition to our seaside Carlsbad landscape. Before Legoland, there were few places so friendly to young children. Parents around the world are familiar with the feeling of bringing an eager child to an amusement park, only to find them frightened and wanting to go home. At Legoland, however, young children romp and play in the safety of an overgrown playground, a child’s paradise. The colors are bright, bold and friendly, the rides are on the slower side, and many welcome parents, grandparents, and guardians. When Denmark decided on San Diego county to house their treasure, they hit a bullseye. Amusement parks bathed in sunshine fare much better than those drenched in rain for much if the year, as is the case in colder weather climates. There are a number of interactive rides and attractions for children, where kids make choices, turn knobs, slide doors open and shut, and follow a educating itinerary. Adults delight in the delicious meatballs available on site, and a variety of many fresh foods.

The most memorable aspect of visiting Legoland, whether one is an adult or a child, is taking in the towering life-size creations made 100% of actual legos! There are more than 50 attractions at the theme park, but this is simply a detail compared to the acrobatics of childhood memories that come into play upon any visit. Who hasn’t assembled a row of legos with great delight? This park realizes a child’s dream in living color and with grand proportions. Match a living fantasy with a family adventure and you have material for memory-making days. (This post by B. McDonald)

Some of Legoland’s history can be found on their international website:

Ole Kirk Christiansen started making wooden toys in his small workshop in Billund, Denmark in 1932. Two years later, Ole Kirk decided upon a name for his toys and his workshop – LEGO®, a contraction of the Danish words ‘leg godt,’ meaning ‘play well.’ Coincidentally, it was later learned that LEGO in Latin means “I put together” or “I assemble.” In 1947, the company bought its first plastics injection-molding machine and in 1949 the forerunner to the LEGO brick was introduced, under the name “Automatic Binding Bricks”.

Inner tubes on the bricks were introduced in 1958, which significantly increased the number of possible building combinations. In 1967, the larger DUPLO® bricks for pre-school children were introduced, and LEGO TECHNIC for older children debuted in 1977. LEGO DACTA®, now know as The Educational Division, was set up in 1980. LEGOLAND California is a 128-acre park geared specifically towards youngsters ages two through 12. With over 50 family rides, “hands-on” attractions and shows, LEGOLAND California provides education, adventure and fun in this first park of its kind in the United States.”
