San Diego Beaches

San Diego Beaches

There are several beaches in and around the San Diego area. Black Beach used to be known as Torrey Pines State Beach and Torrey Pines City Beach. Black Beach is a sandy strip situated at the bottom of 300 foot cliffs and is two miles long. There is a glider port atop the cliffs overlooking the beach, where Para gliders, remote controlled gliders, and hang gliders can be seen soaring. The safest way to get to the beach is from adjacent beaches to the north and south. High tides and surf can also obstruct the access. It’s best to stay away from the majestic cliffs due to slides that can happen because the cliffs are unstable. There is surfing and a lifeguard.La Jolla Shores, located in La Jolla, is approximately a one mile long sandy beach. This beach has the most gentle waves during the summer. San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve lies adjacent to La Jolla Shores. Many novice scuba classes are held at the shores. There isn’t any fishing and removing objects is prohibited and possession of game is unlawful. Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Scripps Pier, is at the north end of the beach. The pier isn’t open to the public. Steven Birch Aquarium is about ½ a mile from La Jolla Shores.

Tucked between sandstone cliffs, is La Jolla Cove. This is a very small beach with extraordinary beauty and is one of the most photographed beaches in Southern California. La Jolla Cove is north facing and is ideal for snorkelers, scuba divers and swimmers, due to the small surf in the summer. Sometimes the visibility of the water can exceed 30 feet. La Jolla Cove is with in the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve. This helps ensure the marine life remains plentiful.

There is a small beach partially protected be a seawall, this beach is The Children’s pool. This was to be a fully protected swimming area, but sand has filled in much of the area. This beach is very picturesque with panoramic views. Seals and Sea Lions are present on or near the beach much of the year. There is a marine mammal reserve, called Seal Rock, which is just off the shore. Wipeout beach is to the south and Shell Beach is to the north or this beach. The reefs that are just off shore make this a popular beach for scuba divers.

The beautiful scenery, surf breaks and rocky shore are what Windansea Beach are best known for. Sandstone rocks along the beach offer a secluded atmosphere for sunbathing.

Extending approximately one mile north of Crystal Pier to Pacific Beach Point is, North Pacific Beach. There are 75 foot high cliffs that border this beach. There is also an extension of the boardwalk traversing the cliff top. This runs along much of the south end of the beach. There is Tourmaline Surfing Park at the north end of the beach.

One of the busiest beaches is Pacific Beach. Pacific Beach is located just south of Crystal Pier and extends south before becoming Mission Beach. Pacific Beach is in the city of San Diego. It draws large crowds of tourist and locals every summer.

Mission Bay is a large beach. It is approximately 46 percent land and 54 percent water, with 27 miles of shoreline, 19 miles are sandy beaches. Mission Bay is used by sail boaters, rowers, motor boaters, water-skiers, swimmers, joggers and picnickers. There are many species of fish, birds and other animals. There is a nature reserve at it’s northern end near Crown Point.

At the center of the Golden Strand is Mission Beach. It spans just over one mile in length between South Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. Mission Beach is on of the most popular beach areas in San Diego. Large crowds go to Mission Beach in the summer. Belmont Park is adjacent to Mission Beach.

At the south end of the Golden Strand, which runs from Pacific Beach Point to the Mission Bay Channel is South Mission Beach. South Mission Beach is one of the widest beaches and is popular for sports.

Located in the community of Ocean Beach is, Ocean Beach. It is approximately one mile long and is broken up by several rock jetties. There is a volleyball area near the north end. There is a 24 hour dog beach called Dog Beach. At the south end of the beach is the Ocean Beach Municipal Pier, which is available for walking and fishing.

To find a hotel near any of these beaches, check out this website www.san-diego.us. They will be able to help you find what you need in a hotel.

Legoland – A San Diego Hotel Deal Favorite! Honor the Child Within

Legoland California

Legoland – A San Diego Hotel Deal Favorite! Honor the Child Within.

Our best deal $10 Off Resort Hopper Tickets Plus 2nd Day Free!

Our first post is about Legoland! For native Southern Californians, Legoland has been a welcome addition to our seaside Carlsbad landscape. Before Legoland, there were few places so friendly to young children. Parents around the world are familiar with the feeling of bringing an eager child to an amusement park, only to find them frightened and wanting to go home. At Legoland, however, young children romp and play in the safety of an overgrown playground, a child’s paradise. The colors are bright, bold and friendly, the rides are on the slower side, and many welcome parents, grandparents, and guardians. When Denmark decided on San Diego county to house their treasure, they hit a bullseye. Amusement parks bathed in sunshine fare much better than those drenched in rain for much if the year, as is the case in colder weather climates. There are a number of interactive rides and attractions for children, where kids make choices, turn knobs, slide doors open and shut, and follow a educating itinerary. Adults delight in the delicious meatballs available on site, and a variety of many fresh foods.

The most memorable aspect of visiting Legoland, whether one is an adult or a child, is taking in the towering life-size creations made 100% of actual legos! There are more than 50 attractions at the theme park, but this is simply a detail compared to the acrobatics of childhood memories that come into play upon any visit. Who hasn’t assembled a row of legos with great delight? This park realizes a child’s dream in living color and with grand proportions. Match a living fantasy with a family adventure and you have material for memory-making days. (This post by B. McDonald)

Some of Legoland’s history can be found on their international website:

Ole Kirk Christiansen started making wooden toys in his small workshop in Billund, Denmark in 1932. Two years later, Ole Kirk decided upon a name for his toys and his workshop – LEGO®, a contraction of the Danish words ‘leg godt,’ meaning ‘play well.’ Coincidentally, it was later learned that LEGO in Latin means “I put together” or “I assemble.” In 1947, the company bought its first plastics injection-molding machine and in 1949 the forerunner to the LEGO brick was introduced, under the name “Automatic Binding Bricks”.

Inner tubes on the bricks were introduced in 1958, which significantly increased the number of possible building combinations. In 1967, the larger DUPLO® bricks for pre-school children were introduced, and LEGO TECHNIC for older children debuted in 1977. LEGO DACTA®, now know as The Educational Division, was set up in 1980. LEGOLAND California is a 128-acre park geared specifically towards youngsters ages two through 12. With over 50 family rides, “hands-on” attractions and shows, LEGOLAND California provides education, adventure and fun in this first park of its kind in the United States.”
